Kings Beach Tavern has been welcoming locals and visitors from afar for 67 years in its current building and much longer in other more humble structures.
The history of the tavern’s site in Caloundra stretches back to an early guest house called Kings Grand Central, built by Allan and Eliza King who married in 1890 and settled in Caloundra not long after.
The development of Sunshine Coast tourism increased once again due to increased car ownership during the 1920s and 1930s.
Kings Grand Central was built near a sand track, later to become the corner of Edmund and King Street. It was a popular place to stay, and, in 1935, a second storey was added to the wooden structure to accommodate the increasing number of holiday visitors.
The building was demolished to make way for the construction of the Perle Hotel, which was opened on the site on August 1, 1957.
The opening received enthusiastic media coverage. The Caloundra Weekly on 1 August 1957 noted the launch of a “new luxury hotel” overlooking King’s Beach.
“The Hotel Perle, Caloundra’s new luxury hotel, will be officially opened tonight… with [an] unusual design and colour scheme”.
It noted: “The dining room is tastefully furnished and with a huge mirror set in the northern wall has a view of the ocean from any position in the room”.
It concluded with: “Manager of the Hotel Perle is Mr K. Fagan, who says he intends to create an atmosphere of home for guests which is what they most appreciate.”
The hotel served its community for many years, becoming a local favourite. In 1991, the Perle Hotel was rebuilt and was re-named Kings Beach Tavern.
Located on the Sunny Coast just minutes from the beach, you’ll find Kings Beach Tavern perched on a hill overlooking the ocean.
